Northwood Brothers Photograph 1910s
Reproduced from the original glass plates by the Alexander Turnbull Library Endowment Trust, Wellington, with assistance of the Listener.
In the early 1890s the Northwood family moved to North Auckland and settled at Pukenui, on the Houhora Harbour. Richard Arthur Northwood, was a pharmacist who encouraged his sons to take up photography. Three of them did: Arthur James, Richard Alfred, and Hubert Charles. Arthur James Northwood established a studio in Kaitaia, which he operated from 1910 until his death in 1949. Richard Alfred Northwood worked as an accountant in Kohukohu where, with his brother Hubert Charles Northwood, he operated from 1910 to 1919 the Northwood Brothers studio. The Northwood brothers photographs are a wonderful snapshot in time that show life in the Far North od New Zealand in the early 1900s.
